Gum Recession - Pinhole Surgical Technique

Gum recession breakthrough treatment also known as Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation™ and Lunchtime Gum Lift™

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST®), invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S., is a scalpel-free, suture-free procedure for treating gum recession.

This procedure is performed by making a small hole with a needle in the gum tissue. Using specially designed instruments, the gum tissue is loosened and guided over the receded part of the tooth. Since there is no incision or suturing, patients can expect minimal post-operative symptoms (pain, swelling and bleeding). Most patients also are pleasantly surprised by the instant cosmetic improvement.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is gum recession?

Gum recession refers to the loss of gum tissue along the gumline. This can occur as a result of periodontal disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, advanced periodontitis), the natural aging process, or abrasive habits when it comes to brushing the teeth.

Why should gum recession be taken seriously?

When gum recession occurs, the root structure of the tooth becomes exposed. This means that tooth decay and other problems can affect the teeth along the gumline and beneath it. Since healthy gums are essential for a healthy mouth, getting gum recession treated is important for lasting dental wellness.

What is Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique?

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique is a minimally invasive option for treating gum recession. Unlike traditional grafting techniques, PST is scalpel and suture free.
All of the tools and techniques used to perform the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique were created by Dr. John Chao.

How does Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique differ from traditional gum grafting?

Traditional gum recession treatments involve the use of donor tissue or soft tissue grafts in order to rebuild the gumline. This soft tissue would be sutured in place and would join with existing gum tissue as it healed. While this traditional grafting treatment is effective, comparable results with better patient experience can be achieved through the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique.

How is Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique performed?

During the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique, a needle is used to make a small hole in the patient's existing gum tissue. Through this pinhole, special instruments are used to gently loosen the gum tissue. These tools help expand and slide the gumline to cover the exposed root structure. There are no grafts, no sutures, and no incisions needed with the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique. It simply involves the adjustment of the existing tissue.

What are the benefits of Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique?

The benefits of the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique are many:

  • Less Discomfort for the patient after treatment.
  • Faster recovery for the patient than traditional grafting.
  • No need for uncomfortable sutures.
  • No need for scalpels or invasive surgical tools.
  • No need to take donor tissue from the patients palate.
  • Excellent, natural-looking, long-lasting results.

Dental Implants

Since the FDA gave its final approval to use MDI (mini dental implants) for long term use, using the mini and hybrid dental implants to replace missing teeth and stabilize loose dentures has become the fastest growing procedure in dentistry today. The fact that these MDI's are easy to place, can immediately be loaded with force and are about half the price of a conventional implant have made these titanium implants so popular. Placement of these implants is accomplished quickly and easily in the dental office with only local anesthetic. Using a precise, controlled, minimally invasive surgical technique, the MDI implants are placed into the jaw bone, usually with little to no bleeding. Because of the minimally invasive nature of this procedure, MDI placement doesn't require a lengthy healing period, meaning a crown or denture can immediately be placed.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thin shells of ceramic custom designed, then milled from IPS Empress Porcelain blocks in the office in one visit using the Cerec 3D computer. They are then bonded directly to the front surfaces of teeth. They are the ideal choice for improving your smile and have become increasingly popular due to their simplicity and versatility. Porcelain veneers are among the most conservative of esthetic dental restorations, and offer vitality and beauty that is so life like that people will never doubt that they are your natural teeth. At the same time porcelain veneers are incredibly strong. When bonded, they can actually increase and restore a tooth's strength. They are virtually undetectable and highly resistant to coffee, tea or even cigarette stains. Amazingly, all of this can be done in one visit.

Full Porcelain Crowns

Our crowns are made in one visit in office using the Cerec 3D porcelain milling technology. No impressions, No temporaries, No second visit, and no dark metal ring around the gum line like you get with traditional porcelain fused to metal crowns. Full porcelain crowns are translucent like a real tooth, therefore they look more natural and can be bonded to the tooth for a better seal.

Root Canals

Root canal treatment is probably the most maligned of all dental procedures, but the reputation of pain typically associated with "having a root canal" is really not deserved. For the majority of people who will undergo root canal treatment the process itself will be no more involved then having a filling placed. We do most of our root canals in office using rotary nickel titanium instruments for a quicker, easier and more thorough procedure. There are several reasons why a patient may need a root canal, but the overall objective is to save the tooth.

Laser Periodontal Therapy

Gum disease is caused by the bacteria infection in the periodontal pockets. Periodontal pockets are present in people infected with gum disease as the gum is detached from the teeth due to the disease. These pockets are very challenging to keep clean and rarely cause pain. The first step of treatment for gum disease is root planing. This is where we remove the contaminated superficial part of the root by ultrasonic instruments and scaling. The laser then can effectively disinfect the inside of the periodontal pocket after a thorough root planing procedure. The laser beam also sterilizes the affect area and seals off blood vessels minimizing chances of future infections. Inflamed gum tissue can now be easily removed thus slowing the process of gum disease. This procedure is called Laser Curettage. It is a quicker and better way than any of the traditional procedures for mild to moderate periodontal disease.

Cosmetic Gum Reshaping

This treatment involves re-contouring and shaping, the gum tissue that surrounds one or more teeth. It may be performed for functional or aesthetic reasons. Laser gum contouring is used to enhance the patient's smile. For example, the procedure may be used to improve the appearance of "gummy" smile where the teeth appear too short. The teeth may actually be the proper length, but too much gum covers them. Also, in some cases, the gum line is uneven, which can make the teeth appear irregular. Using a laser, Dr. Sandras can easily and predictably reshape the gum tissue to create a more even and balanced look.

Bridge – Fixed

A bridge is a custom made appliance anchored to neighboring teeth that replaces one or more missing teeth. When a lost tooth is replaced with bridge work, the teeth on either side of the missing one are prepared as crowns to serve as abutments to hold the prosthetic (replacement) tooth in place. Bridges are made from superior materials such as porcelain, precious metal or a combination of the two. Aesthetics, function and tissue compatibility are considered when selecting the material most suitable for your needs.

Partials & Dentures

Replaces missing teeth and fills in space for patients who still have some of their own teeth. This appliance can be designed to replace 1 tooth or 14 teeth in either upper or lower arch. Our standard partial denture is made form a combination of cast chrome alloy and acrylic. It has metal clasps which attach to the patient's teeth. We also offer a Cosmetic Partial which is metal free. It is made from a flexible tissue colored thermoplastic material called Valplast. With a durable Valplast partial it is almost impossible to tell real from replacement teeth. The results are truly remarkable.

Having a beautiful smile may be easier than you think. Many people achieve the look they've been dreaming of with our "simple" bleaching procedure. It's safe, quick and inexpensive. Just let us know at any appointment if you would like to begin bleaching. Dental bleaching can be used to correct many tooth discolorations. These discolorations may have been caused by staining, aging, or chemical damage to teeth. Using the latest in bleaching technology, we can offer a safe method for a beautiful "brilliant" smile. In cases of extreme tooth discoloration or existing filling, crowns or veneers may be the only choice. But because of the low cost of bleaching treatments, bleaching is always worth a solid try.

6 Month Smiles

A great alternative to conventional braces. Most adults are unhappy with the appearance of their smile. Crooked teeth make many people self-conscious, reserved or even ashamed of their appearance. But who wants to wear braces for 2-4 years? Now, adults all over the country can smile bigger, brighter and more confidently after wearing braces only 6 months!

Six Month Smiles utilize clear braces to gently straighten teeth in an average of six months. By focusing on the teeth that show when you smile and not making significant bite changes, Dr. Sandras can comfortably straighten your teeth and give you the smile you've always wanted.

Six Month Smiles is a conservative, inexpensive and highly effective. It may sound "too good to be true," but thousands of people are living proof that this is real. You can be next!

If you are still not convinced that Six Month Smiles can give you straight, beautiful teeth in just six months, take a look at some people who have benefited from this remarkable technology. These are actual Six Month Smiles patients.
